Collection: The 1961 Israel Zodiac Collection - Taurus
What is the meaning of The Zodiac in Israel
In Israel, particularly in ancient times, the zodiac (known as Mazzalot or Galgal Ha'Mazalot in Hebrew) held symbolic meaning, representing the cosmic order, Divine power, and the cycle of time, rather than solely fortune-telling. It appeared in synagogue art, such as mosaics in Beit Alpha and Sepphoris, linked to the Hebrew months and sometimes associated with the twelve tribes of Israel. While some contemporary interpretations viewed stars as influencing destiny, a strong rabbinic tradition, exemplified by the saying "Ein Mazal L'Yisrael" ("There is no constellation for Israel"), maintained that a righteous Jew's fate transcended mazzal.
The "zodiac signs according to mazzal" refers to the Jewish zodiac, which uses traditional Western signs but with Hebrew names for the months and zodiacal figures, including: Aries (T'leh), Taurus (Shor), Gemini (T'umim), Cancer (Sartan), Leo (Aryeh), Virgo (Betulah), Libra (Moznaim), Scorpio (Akrav), Sagittarius (Keshet), Capricorn (Gedi), Aquarius (D'li), and Pisces (Dagim).
Here is the list of the 12 signs in the Jewish zodiac, with their Hebrew and English names:
- T'leh (Aries): The Lamb
- Shor (Taurus): The Bull
- T'umim (Gemini): The Twins
- Sartan (Cancer): The Crab
