What is the meaning of The King of Bohemia
The King of Bohemia was the ruler of the Kingdom of Bohemia, a medieval and early modern monarchy located in Central Europe that existed from 1198 to 1918. The kingdom was the predecessor to the modern Czech Republic, with its center in Prague.
Key aspects of the meaning of the King of Bohemia include:
- Electoral Power: The Kingdom of Bohemia was an Imperial State within the Holy Roman Empire (HRE). Its king was one of the seven prince-electors, meaning they had the right to elect the Holy Roman Emperor, making them a significant political power in Europe.
- Unique Status: Bohemia was the only kingdom within the Holy Roman Empire, elevating its ruler above the dukes and princes of other German lands.
- Hereditary Status: Originally a Duchy, it was raised to a hereditary Kingdom in 1198.
"Good King Wenceslas" from the famous Christmas carol is based on Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia (c. 907–935), who was posthumously declared a king. While not a king during his lifetime, he was a revered Christian ruler known for his piety and was later canonized as the patron saint of Bohemia.
- The Historical Figure (The Carol): Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia (Václav) was known for his piety and charity, becoming a legendary figure after his martyrdom in 935.
- The "Kings" Wenceslas: Other historical rulers included Wenceslaus I (King of Bohemia) (reigned 1230–1253), Wenceslaus II (reigned 1278–1305), and Wenceslaus IV (King of Bohemia) (reigned 1378–1419).
While other kings existed, the "Good King Wenceslas" in popular culture is the 10th-century duke and saint.
The King of Bohemia Artwork Collection – The King & The Woodmen
The King of Bohemia Artworks by Tino are created using the original GB 1966 December 1st postage stamp issue, featuring “King Wenceslas” design by 6-year-old Tasveer Shemza from Stratford, chosen from a national children's competition launched on TV’s Blue Peter. The other winning stamp, which appeared alongside King Wenceslas, was a "Snowman" design by James Berry of London.
Tino has chosen the award winning design of the GB 1966 postage stamp design to capture the history of The King of Bohemia in four design colours of White and Silver, Gold, Deep Red, Crimson and Green and Azure Blue, which are the colours associated with King Wenceslas around the world for their meanings:
White and Silver = Symbol of Purity
Gold = Symbol of Royalty and Divinity
Deep Red, Crimson and Green = Symbol of Passion and Nature
Azure Blue = Symbol of Night
The Artworks are available as limited edition prints for enthusiasts and collectors to enjoy and understand the history associated with The King of Bohemia and the award winning stamp design by 6-year-old Tasveer Shemza from Stratford.

Other history of King Wenceslas:
"Good King Wenceslas" refers to the 10th-century Duke of Bohemia,
St. Wenceslaus I, celebrated in a famous Christmas carol for his immense charity, piety, and kindness toward the poor. Although a Duke, he was posthumously deemed a king and saint due to his virtuous life and martyrdom, serving as a symbol of Christian compassion and selfless giving during the winter season.
Key Aspects of the Meaning of King Wenceslas:
- Historical Figure: He was the Duke of Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic) who worked to Christianize the region and was murdered by his brother, Boleslaus the Cruel.
- The Carol's Message: The song, written by John Mason Neale in 1853, highlights a story of Wenceslas braving a harsh winter storm to bring food and fuel to a poor peasant, emphasizing the importance of helping those in need.
